How to record a Chrome tab with sound
Recording a single browser tab is the cleanest way to capture a web app, an online lesson or a video: notifications and other windows never appear in your recording, and Chrome can capture the tab’s audio directly. Here’s how.
Step 1: Open the tab you want to record
Open the page in Chrome and check that its sound plays. Then click the Framecap icon, or press Alt+Shift+V.
Step 2: Turn on System audio
In Framecap, choose Screen, or Screen + camera to add your face. Then turn on System audio. Leave Microphone on to talk over the tab, or turn it off to record only the tab’s sound.
Step 3: Pick the tab and keep “Also share tab audio” on
Click Start recording. In Chrome’s picker, open the Chrome tab list, select your tab, make sure Also share tab audio is switched on, and click Share. If that switch is off, the video will be silent. Framecap warns you when no tab audio is coming through.
Step 4: Stop and download
Press Alt+Shift+S, or click Stop sharing in Chrome’s bar. Then download your recording as an MP4.
Why is my recording silent?
- “Also share tab audio” was off in Chrome’s picker. Record again and leave it on.
- You shared a window instead of a tab. Chrome can’t capture sound from a single app window. Share the tab instead, or the entire screen on Windows and ChromeOS.
- The tab was muted. Right-click the tab and choose Unmute site.
Recording protected video
Some streaming services block screen capture, so their video appears black in recordings. That protection comes from the service and can’t be turned off. Only record content you have the right to record.
